IND vs WI 3rd ODI: Will Rohit guide team clean sweep WI series in Ahmedabad

Having stuck into gloom after losing all the three ODIs in South Africa, this series couldn’t have come at a better time for Indian cricket. India has already nobbled the ODI series 2-0 and will look to go for a clean sweep- even as they may look to experiment with their list- when they take on a humdrum West Indies in the third and final match in Ahmedabad on Friday.

With the IPL auctions hammered for the weekend in Bangalore, various top players in both teams are likely to be more focused on that than a game that has few circumstances. While much is known about the Indian players, the match provides one final chance for various West Indies players, about whom the franchises would know little, to draw their attention at the last minute.

One of those is surely join-bowling all-rounder Odean Smith. The 25-year-old took the wickets of Rishabh Pant and Virat Kholi and then, batting too low down the order at No. 9, beat a 20-ball 24 in the second ODI.

Meanwhile, in another uplift for India, opener Shikhar Dhawan is set to return to add some much-needed firepower to their top order. However, his position has been under the scanner-with numerous pointing out that Dhawan will be 37 by the time of the 2023 ODI World Cup-the opener appears to have the credence of skipper Rohit Sharma.

As was apparent by the move to send Rishabh Pant to open with Rohit in the second ODI, the captain doesn’t favor KL Rahul, who guides the team in the South Africa ODI series, to open the innings. Batting at no. 4, Rahul has emerged at much more proficiency than in the opening spot, where he watches to be too careful in the Powerplay overs.

With scores of 34 not out and 64 in this series, Suryakumar Yadav has shown that the verdict to drop him from the first two ODIs in South Africa was incautious.

With the series in the bag, it will be fascinating to see if Rohit and coach Rahul Dravid relax a few seniors and play the likes of pacer Deepak Chahar, Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravi Bishnoi, and Ishan Kishan. Chahar’s barring from this series, after his 34-ball 54 nearly won India the third ODI against the Proteas at Cape Town, has been surprising.

The most uplifting growth is the disclosure of young pacer Prasidh Krishna, who demolished the Caribbean top order with remarkable figures of 9-3-12-4 in the second ODI. Giving some teeth to India’s ODI bowling, Krishna has made a hard case for being picked in the Test Squad.
