Cairo Shooting World Cup: India claimed the third medal

On Sunday, The Indian trio of Rahi Sarnobat, Esha Singh, and Rhythm Sangwan nailed gold in the women’s 25m pistol team event on the penultimate day of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle/Pistol competition here.

The Indian team recorded a 17-13 triumph over Singapore in a thrilling match-up to claim the country’s third gold of the tournament.

On Saturday, The Indian trio had made it to the title round after crowning the second qualification stage.

This was Esha’s second gold and third medal of the World Cup, as she had earlier nailed a yellow metal in the women’s 10m air pistol team event to add the silver in the solo event she won 10m air pistol.

The Indian women’s team started the gold medal match with six hits out of 15 to Singapore’s four to take a 2-0 lead, and the drama developed after that.

At the end of the third series of five shots each for every member, the scores tied at 3-3, and coach Samaresh Jung called for a time-out as Esha had recorded back-to-back blanks. That appeared to have calmed nerves, and with the professional Rahi arriving into her own and recording five hits in the fifth series, India conducted again with the score reading 7-3.

Nevertheless, Singapore came back powerfully to win the next three series and take the authority for the first time in the match. India came back completely to win the ninth series 12-7 to level the match again at 9-9.

The pendulum kept swaying for the next four series, and after the end of the 13th, the two teams stayed unseparated at 13-13.

India just about fixed the 14th with a 10-8 score-line to go into the 15th series 15-13 on and needing a point more for the win.

Both teams started the 15th series with all three hits but it was the Singaporeans who flashed first, writing blanks over the next six shots to give India the title and the gold.

Earlier in the day, Shriyanka Sadangi and Akhil Sheoran bagged a bronze medal in the 50m rifle three positions mixed team event.

The Indian duo was fifth out of 34 teams, then third out of eight, and then won the bronze convincingly, defeating Austrians Rebecca Koeck and Gernot Rumpler 16-10.

Currently, India is placed second in the medals count.

In the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event, India dropped short of the medal rounds with Bhavesh Shekhawat completing 12th with 576 while Anish Bhanwala ended 18th with 571. Gurpreet Singh, with 554, was also back at 32nd spot.

On Monday, The final two medals of the Cairo World Cup will be decided in team matches, and India, now ranked second on the medal count, will desire the top spot.
